The UB Smoke Free coalition is important because it brings awareness to students regarding their campus and surrounding communities while promoting a healthy life style. The coalition provides passionate students the platform to reach the community by utilizing creative, engaging, and thought-provoking programming.
Within the community, UB Smoke Free has collaborated with Maryland General Hospital; on campus, we have collaborated with the Undergraduate Student Senate, UB Wellness Center, Student Events Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, Graduate Student Senate, Real Estate Law and the UB Leadership Program on campus.
Our mission is to engage the UB community with programming that supports healthy lifestyle choices regarding the use of tobacco products. We have thirteen coalition members representing the College of Liberal Arts, The School of Business, and the Law School. Join us. It's fun!

As restaurants and bars are becoming smoke-free in Maryland on February 1, 2008 and social norms are bending to embrace a smoke-free lifestyle, we decided to survey a diverse sample of UB students, faculty, and staff regarding the UB campus smoking policy. 152 surveys were completed.
One question, "Is smoking permitted near the entrance of campus buildings?" 67% answered "yes." "Does smoking near the entrance of campus buildings have a negative impact on you?" 53% responded "yes."
The response by the UB community to these questions created controversial and expressive dialogue and some chose to hand write comments on their surveys. In reply to the first question, a student wrote, "It's not permitted, but people do it anyway and I hate it."
What is the answer? Is smoking permitted near the entrance of on campus buildings? The answer is no; yet 67% of those surveyed thought it was...
UB smoking policy reads, "Smoking is prohibited within all University vehicles, University buildings, and within 15 feet of entrance to University buildings"
